About the Author

Marion Woodfork Simmons is a family historian with an interest in preserving local history. She is the owner of Woodfork Genealogy LLC, whose mission is to empower and encourage ordinary people to preserve the history of the communities where they live, work or have an affiliation. 

In 2010, Ms. Simmons initiated the Union High History Project to preserve the history of Caroline County’s only high school for Negroes during the era of segregation.  The output of the project was a national award winning book titled Memories of Union High: An Oasis in Caroline County, Virginia 1903-1969.  The book was a 2012 Indie Excellence Book Award finalist and a 2012 USA Best Book Award finalist

Ms. Simmons has been recognized by the Caroline County Historical Society, the Caroline County Board of Supervisors and the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society for her efforts to preserve local history.   She speaks to genealogy groups on the subject of researching, documenting and preserving local history.
